The images reflect the ideas, experiences and emotions that we confront, create and reveal about ourselves when alone. I examine scenes of solitude – both emotional and physical. I am interested in the internal thoughts had when left alone. This series examines the idea of a standardized emotional state, where it is considered better to pretend than to disappoint. The masses adhere to the belief that there exists a standard for everything and so long as we follow it, we will be happy and safe. As a direct result of this, a great many people have been left feeling frustrated, unhappy and alienated. To cope, we each wear masks that we only remove when alone. The mask is the center of the dialogue of this series. These images offer a space of acceptance and imagination in contrast to the subject’s daily experience of mask wearing. They make no attempt at being an in depth documentary of the subject’s emotional state but rather are simply moments that reveal a soul not seen by the naked eye. Through these images, I hope to make the viewer aware of a psychological coherence rather than the visual." |
