SungKwan Ma b. Seoul, Korea immigrated to Queens, NY in 1992. Selected Exhibitions: City College Art Gallery Education: BA in Liberal Arts with a specialty in photography from City College, New York City Awards: The Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship, 2000 The General Motors Scholarship, 1998 and 1999 Therese McCabe Ralston Connor Award, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 Sung Kwan Ma is inspired by the diversity of culture and the uniqueness of Tibet. Located in the snowcapped Himalayas, it is geographically protected from the outside world by a high mountainous plateau. He states that his photographs are about the Tibetan people who are the survivors and the conquerors of a harsh environment. His portraits examine their struggle and ability to preserve their cultural traditions while living under the modern and industrial Chinese reign, that began 50 years ago. |
