Sung Kwan Ma is inspired by the diversity of culture and the uniqueness of Tibet. Located in the snowcapped Himalayas, it is geographically protected from the outside world by a high mountainous plateau. He states that his photographs are about “the Tibetan people who are the survivors and the conquerors of a harsh environment.” His portraits examine their struggle and ability to preserve their cultural traditions while living under the modern and industrial Chinese reign, that began 50 years ago.
