These messages aren’t your everyday graffiti but - words that I believe artists, as well as the general public, create for individuals who are searching for humor, visual pleasure or guidance. Since 1999 I have taken photos on the streets and public venues in New York City and throughout the world, where typographical art catches my attention and empowers me within. Although the original messages are not my creation, my goal is to document and share the work of these anonymous artists in exhibitions and publications so that others can enjoy their contributions. I think this is very important because these messages don’t have a long life span. Eventually, they are painted over or washed away. By focusing in on, and cropping these visual elements, my intent is to decontextualize the words to a point where they are able to work independently as my own message. Helena de Vengoechea is a photographer, based in New York City, looking to enhance her art and commercial photography career. She worked as a Photographer, Graphic Designer and Art Director at Ralph Lauren, WM I, Simmons Jewelry Co, Travel & Leisure, GAP and more. She continues to freelance while beginning her own photography business which sells her photos as fine prints as well as provides commercial photography services in the metro area. Helena was born in Caracas, Venezuela and lived there till she was 5 years old. Early in her childhood a camera was given to her which she constantly used to shoot and create montages. In 1980 her parents moved her from South America to Connecticut. She grew up there and then studied photography for two years at the University of Colorado at Boulder. While studying at the university she learned about how difficult it is to survive as a full-time artist. That being so, she switched her major to creative advertising because she was drawn to graphic visuals that continue to inspire her today. After graduation she returned to the east coast to go to communication design school at Parsons School of Design in New York City and to pursue her dream as an artist.
