“Having been involved with boxing when I was younger, I wanted to use photography and in particular, documentary techniques and abstract imagery to express concepts about the nature of boxing to an audience that might not be open to boxing imagery.
In the gym, the fighter’s greatest enemy is his / herself; if a boxer can conquer their internal demons they will win over one who cannot. Fear is a constant factor as is self-doubt. To many black and Latino youth, boxing becomes a dream of a better life if the ability is there. It is a chance to escape from the drugs and guns of the streets for a number of individuals. It is also very honest in that it separates the talkers from those with real ability…the truth is decided in the ring after enough sweat and fear have been left in the training rooms.”
