I've always photographed my family; however, it wasn't until about seven years ago that I decided to do it intensely. Part of the catalyst for this was the lack of documentary photography I saw that dealt with middle-class African-American family life. The scenes depicted include everyday activities as well as special events, and my goal has been to photograph them in a manner which infuses them with beauty, drama and wry humor - in essence, to capture the spirit of kinship.
